Avoiding a Panic at the Pump

An interruption in petrol deliveries from a Coryton oil refinery operated by the Swiss company Petroplus led to urgings by UK Energy Minister Charles Hendry for consumers in the London area to go about their daily business and avoid panic at the pumps. While there are indications that other companies, notably BP and Shell, are ready to provide access to petrol if necessary, the event reminds many people how much they rely on their vehicles for everyday activities. While widespread panic is not the answer, taking the time to develop a personal contingency plan is always a good idea.

Motorists can be prepared for a fuel shortage by making alternative plans for transportation. This can mean arranging to commute with neighbours and co-workers when possible, helping everyone to trim petrol consumption. People who live closer to work can also consider using a green alternative, such as riding a bicycle or even walking. In some cases, public transportation may serve as a viable alternative during a fuel shortage.

Alternative plans don't have to wait for a crisis to be of use. The same strategies can be used when the car is in the workshop or is not available for some reason. Periodically making a few test runs just to make sure the plan works properly is also a good idea. Having a backup plan in place can go a long way toward minimising panic during some sort of fuel shortage and ease the effect that the shortage has on households and businesses.
